Has Your Fleet Implemented the Drive Safely Work Week (DSWW) Campaign?
24 Sep 2018Drive Safely Work Week™ (DSWW) has been an annual campaign sponsored by the Network of Employers for Traffic Safety, or NETS, for short for many years. For the 2018 campaigns, companies may implement the Drive Safely Work Week may be at any time depending on the convenience and relevance of employer’s schedule.
The Network of Employers for Traffic Safety, or NETS for short, was founded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as part of an employer-led initiative for improving safety for employees, their families, and members of the community by preventing traffic accidents occurring on and off the job. One of the ways they are doing this is with the Drive Safely Work Week.
What is the Drive Safely Work Week Campaign?
The Drive Safely Work Week campaign has been held each year since 1996. Each year introduces a new theme or area of focus for workplace safety. This means the material never grows stale or old and engages drivers who may have participated in earlier programs to continue participating for new information that takes advantage of new technology and presentation methods.
Who Sponsors the DSWW Campaign?
NETS is the driving force behind the campaign. Because it is a public/private initiative, it represents the interest of more than half a million vehicles that travel more than 12 billion miles around the world each year. The organization’s goal is to prevent accidents by offering actionable steps drivers can take to improve their performance, alertness, and responsiveness behind the wheel whether they’re on the clock for business or behind the wheel for personal reasons.
When Can the Campaign be Implemented?
The official observation of the DSWW campaign is the first week in October, but the materials created for the campaign are not dated so employers can conduct their own safety week experience as their schedules dictate. Allowing complete autonomy on dates for the campaign allow a wider selection of employers to take advantage of the tools and information available as part of this important safety initiative.
Resources for Your Safety Efforts
Did you know that driver behavior is a contributing factor in 94 percent of all traffic accidents? The costs of these accidents for employers exceeds $47 billion each year with an even split between accidents occurring on the job and off the job making driver safety a concern for all employers and not just large fleets. These are a few of the resources you can use as part of your DSWW Campaign to promote safety for your employees and for your community:
- Costs of Crashes Calculator
- Impaired Driving Module
- Distracted Driving Module
- Speed Module
- Parking and Backing Module
- DSWW 2015 Toolkit
Now that you know the basics, isn’t it time you implement a DSWW Campaign of your own for your business? Whether you are a fleet or you employ people who drive to and from work each day, you can enjoy huge benefits from safer driving from all your employees.
Know too, that utilizing GPS fleet tracking can help your drivers drive more safely as well, and can provide you with alerts for aggressive driving, hard braking, speeding and more.
