NICB Annual Auto Theft Report
17 Aug 2022According to the recent annual auto theft report by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), Ford and Chevrolet pick-up trucks are the most stolen vehicle two years in a row. The GMC full-size pick-up truck also made the top ten list in their report for most stolen vehicles.
Roughly one in seven passenger vehicles stolen were Ford, Chevrolet, or GMC full-size pick up trucks. In addition, theft of passenger vehicles was up 8% in 2021 compared to the previous year.
In addition to these vehicles, Honda CR-V and the Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee were the only two SUVs to make the top ten list. Other mid-sized vehicles on the list include the Honda Civic, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry.
According to the report, a major factor driving the increase in theft is the rise in the value of used cars. Supply chain disruptions and chip shortages led to a lower supply of new and used vehicles on the market, driving prices up along with inflation. Therefore, carjackers can get a better price for stolen vehicles.
Due to these reasons, car values have increased by about 35% in the last two years, making stolen vehicles more desirable for thieves. In the U.S., used cars can be broken down and sold for parts, or they can be shipped and resold overseas.
How to Protect Yourself Against Auto Theft
Due to the increase in auto theft, people should improve their security to reduce the chances of getting their vehicles stolen in the first place and increase their chances of recovering it if it’s stolen.
Although there is no way to completely eliminate the chance of getting your vehicle stolen, taking some extra precautions will help.
The NCIB recommends the following steps to better protect your vehicle:
- Keep your windows up, lock your doors, and keep your keys on you.
- Park in well-lit areas, and areas with surveillance cameras or nearby security personnel when possible.
- Don’t keep any valuables in your car, and if you do, keep them out of sight.
- Use a GPS tracking device for your vehicle.
GPS Tracking for Auto Theft
There are many benefits to using GPS tracking devices for your vehicle, and vehicle recovery is no exception. GPS car tracking devices are affordable and easy to install in any vehicle. If your vehicle does happen to get stolen, your GPS tracking device will allow you to easily and quickly locate the stolen vehicle so that you can get your vehicle back as soon as possible.
