Supreme Court To Hear US V. Jones – GPS Tracking Case
2 Nov 2011On Tuesday November 8th 2011, the US Supreme Court will hear one of the most technology driven cases to date. At issue is whether the police will need to get a search warrant before attaching a GPS tracking device to a citizen’s car. It will be very interesting to see the outcome.
The case involves a DC nightclub owner who was investigated for drug trafficking in 2005. Jones’ conviction was previously overturned by a Washington DC appeals court, who cited it violated Jones’ fourth amendment rights to an unreasonable search and seizure. The US Justice Department appealed and now the Supreme Court will hear the matter.
As technology evolves, so do the tools available to law enforcement officials, businesses and private citizens. In this case, gps tracking technology is pretty mainstream, with location based services appearing in almost every single new cell phone on the planet.
